About Keewaydin State Park

Keewaydin State Park is located in northeastern Minnesota on the western shore of Lake Vermilion, one of the state’s largest and clearest lakes. Covering 337 acres, the park provides visitors with sandy beaches, forested campsites, and a range of water-based recreational activities. Its landscape comprises mixed hardwoods and pines, supporting species such as white-tailed deer, bald eagles, loons, and other native wildlife. The lake sustains populations of walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and muskie, making it a popular destination for anglers. The park itself was established in 1951 to offer recreational access to Lake Vermilion’s exceptional waters and preserve natural shoreline habitat. Visitors enjoy swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, and hiking on the park’s short trails that weave through pine and aspen stands. The campground includes both modern drive-in sites and primitive options close to the shore. Keewaydin State Park attracts visitors seeking a quieter, less developed experience compared to other regional parks, making it ideal for families, anglers, and nature watchers. The area’s historical significance includes its relationship to Ojibwe tribes and early European settlers who valued the abundant fishery and forest resources. The park’s natural setting, combined with lake access and quality amenities, create a balanced outdoor experience for both day use and extended stays. Nearby Vermilion Lake supports a strong outdoor recreation economy through tourism, emphasizing conservation of this freshwater ecosystem.
